Apple Puts an 18+ Floor Under Every AI Companion App

Apple will force AI companion apps to carry an 18+ App Store rating from 16 November, adding new Dating and Relationships content descriptors.

The takeaway

Apple now treats romantic AI companions as an adult category. Any app declaring the Dating and Relationships descriptor gets an 18+ floor, so teams shipping companion features should audit their rating questionnaire before the 12 January 2027 deadline.

Why it matters for builders

If your app or an agent you ship exposes a romantic or companion mode, even as a side feature, the App Store now forces an 18+ rating and a public declaration. Audit the age rating questionnaire before mid-November, plan for the loss of teen discovery, and keep iOS, Android and Brazil ratings reconciled separately.

Apple Puts an 18+ Floor Under AI Companion Apps

Apple is drawing a hard line under a category it has hosted for two years. In a developer news post published on 2 November, the company said App Store Connect will gain two new age-rating content descriptors from 16 November: Shared Location and Dating and Relationships. Any app that declares the second one gets a minimum age rating of 18+.

The definition is broader than dating apps. Apple describes the descriptor as "features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content." That second clause drags AI companion products - chatbots that users talk to as partners, girlfriends, boyfriends or fantasy characters - into the same bucket as Tinder and Bumble.

What actually changes on 16 November

Developers answer both declarations when submitting an app update or touching the age rating questionnaire. Every app, including ones that never ship another build, must complete them by 12 January 2027.

Location sharing is treated more gently: Apple says it "may not have an impact on your minimum age rating in some regions." Brazil is the exception carved out in the post, with local rules requiring an A16 rating for Shared Location and an A18 for Dating and Relationships. Developers who believe they qualify for a lower Brazilian rating - Apple's example is parent-and-child location sharing - can request an official rating from the Justice Ministry.

Why AI companions are the real target

The existing 18+ tier on the App Store has mostly covered gambling, explicit content, violence and drug references. Romance was never a category Apple had to police at the platform level, because dating apps largely self-selected for adults.

Virtual companions broke that assumption. The Verge notes that the extension is meant to stop minors from reaching AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions, alongside virtual partner simulators that "could pose mental health risks." TechCrunch reports that the change follows Apple's global age-assurance rollout and expanded parental controls, and that the top AI companion apps had been downloaded 220 million times across the App Store and Google Play as of last summer.

Apple draws no line between explicit and merely emotionally intimate: if a feature engages a user in romantic content, the descriptor applies.

What builders should do now

The practical work is a self-audit, not a rewrite. Products where romance is incidental - a social app with matchmaking, an assistant that roleplays when pushed - are the ones most likely to be mis-rated. Declaring late means a rejected update or a rating change mid-release cycle.

The deadline is also a positioning decision. An 18+ badge is honest, but it removes an app from teen discovery inside the App Store, where much of the companion market sits. Teams shipping to iOS and Android now have two different rating ladders to reconcile, with Brazil as a third.
