Jeff Dean Leaves Google to Launch Discovery Loop AI Startup

Google's AI leadership underwent a dramatic shakeup on Wednesday as chief scientist Jeff Dean announced his departure after 27 years to launch Discovery Loop, a new startup focused on automating the scientific research process with AI.

What Happened

Dean, Google's 30th employee and co-founder of Google Brain, is leaving alongside three senior colleagues: Sanjay Ghemawat (Google Senior Fellow and Dean's longtime collaborator on MapReduce, BigTable, and TensorFlow), Oriol Vinyals (DeepMind research VP and Gemini technical lead), and Quoc Le (Google Brain co-founder).

The four co-founders are launching Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation that aims to build AI systems capable of running thousands of experiments simultaneously — proposing hypotheses, executing them, evaluating results, and iterating autonomously. Google will serve as a founding investor and cloud partner for the venture, with Khosla Ventures and Radical Ventures co-leading the seed round.

Broader Leadership Overhaul

The exits are part of a wider restructuring. Demis Hassabis is stepping back from day-to-day leadership of Google DeepMind to become its chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's CTO, has been promoted to SVP overseeing Gemini model development and will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Alphabet shares fell approximately 4% following the announcement, according to CNBC, adding to a 7% drop two weeks prior when the company announced increased AI capital expenditure without committing to a release timeline for its delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro model. Google is forecasting up to $205 billion in full-year capex, and recently turned cash flow negative for the first time on record.

Why It Matters for Builders

Dean's exit — and the structure of Discovery Loop — signals a shift in how top AI talent sees the landscape. Rather than competing on frontier models, Discovery Loop is betting that the next wave of AI value lies in automating the experimentation loop itself. The startup plans to first tackle ML research automation, then expand into hardware design, drug discovery, and clean energy.
