Zuckerberg Predicts Billions Will Have Personal AI Agents by 2031
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out an ambitious vision for AI agents during the company's quarterly earnings call on Wednesday, predicting that billions of people will have their own personal AI agents acting on their behalf within the next five years.
"I think that it's extremely unlikely if you look out five years from now... that you don't have billions of people with a personal agent that understands your goals and that is just working on your behalf 24/7 to achieve your goals in whatever the domain is that you care about," Zuckerberg told investors, according to TechCrunch.
Zuckerberg envisions these agents handling finances, health decisions, interpersonal relationships, and household management — essentially becoming a persistent AI layer across every aspect of daily life.
What Zuckerberg Actually Announced
WhatsApp and Messenger will serve as the primary interface for these consumer agents. Zuckerberg noted that WhatsApp is already the leading platform where users interact with Meta AI, and he sees messaging surfaces becoming "increasingly important" as users interact with multiple agents.
The company already has traction on the business side — more than one million businesses have adopted Meta's business agents since their global rollout on WhatsApp and Messenger this quarter. But the consumer play is where Meta is placing its biggest bet, calling personal agents "the foundation for our next wave of products and revenue lines."
The Billions-First, Billions-Later Problem
Investors weren't immediately convinced. Meta's stock dropped nearly 10% after the earnings report, driven by concerns about spiraling AI costs. Free cash flow collapsed to $784 million this quarter — a 91% year-over-year decline from $8.55 billion.
Reality Labs, Meta's AR/VR division, burned through another $4.6 billion this quarter, bringing its cumulative losses since 2021 to approximately $88 billion. Meanwhile, Meta and BlackRock announced a $14 billion data center partnership in El Paso, Texas, signaling that AI infrastructure spending is only accelerating.
"We believe that there will continue to be a significantly higher margin on selling intelligence rather than selling compute directly," Zuckerberg said — a bet that the software layer of AI, not the hardware, will drive Meta's returns.
Meta isn't alone in the agent race. Google emphasized custom AI agents in its recent Search overhaul, while subscriptions to Anthropic's Claude have surged as engineers adopt the agentic coding assistant Claude Code. The battle for the personal agent market is already underway — Zuck is just the loudest voice claiming the prize.
